Wannabe superpower with zero accountability administrators
The World Cup hockey game between New Zealand and Netherlands was disrupted briefly last evening when the floodlights at the spanking new hockey stadium in India’s capital failed partially.
Even for those who are used to 10 hour power cuts at homes, this was a shock. This is the after all the World Cup and it doesn’t get bigger than that for a game that is played in more nations than cricket is. The whole world was watching and we became a butt of needless, ‘third world’ jokes.
Shock yes! Anger, yes! But surprise? No. Haven’t we seen enough by now to never be surprised? The mismanagement, the shambolic state of affairs, multiple agencies fighting with one another over ego, organisers not seeing eye to eye with authorities and so on. If anything, we should be grateful it happened just for a short duration and that too on the fourth day of the event. We should pray that it doesn’t happen again.
Those who have followed my blog posts would know how I have repeatedly pointed out the ills that afflict us in almost every sphere. When the ODI between India and Sri Lanka was called off in Delhi on December 27 last, for example, I had said that I am surprised so few games are called off. There I had pointed out that the casual attitude that is sending our nation hurtling towards mediocrity (I know some would say we have gone below that) is all pervasive and it is no different when it comes to sports management, which in any case are all controlled by unscrupulous politicians.
The entire system works through sycophants and greasing of palms, and in the absence of any accountability, those responsible grow even more brazen. Its only people like you and me who are embarrassed when such instances happen. I received direct messages on my twitter account within seconds of tweeting that the game had been halted due to power failure. These messages were all from people who were embarrassed and angry at what happened.
